100 Idioms with exaples and definition for my Oral Communication...



1. Half-pint = a child, a person who is half the size of an adult

Ex.: When you were a boy - just a half-pint - your hair was brown.

2. Slam dunk = a decisive action which was easy to accomplish

Ex.: We got the merger. I slam dunked the deal.

3. Take a shot = I'll take a shot at taking the murder case, even though it's difficult.

Ex.: I'll take a shot at taking the murder case, even though it's difficult.

4. Fish out of water = Feel uncomfortable because you are in an unfamiliar situation.

Ex.: Todd is a country boy raised in a small town in Idaho and was like a fish out of water when he visited New York City.

5. Half the battle = half of the task completed, half of the job done

Ex.: You've done the research for the report. That's half the battle.

6. Ham = joker

Ex.: When you imitate John Candy, you're quite a ham.

7. A frog in the throat = sore throat, or your throat is dry, and have difficulty speaking because you want to cough.

Ex.: In a speech contest last year, she suddenly got a frog in her throat and had a hard time speaking.

8. Break a leg = good luck

Ex.: Sharpay told Gabriela to break a leg in her career.

9. Been in hot water = in a difficult situation because you have said or done something wrong.

Ex.: He has been in hot water with his boss. He might be fired.

10. Holy cow = an expression of surprise

Ex.: Holy cow! How did she get the full score on such a difficult exam!

11. Glued to something = cannot stop watching or looking at something

Ex.: Bea was glued to the television watching Pokemon.

12. In the same boat = be in the same situation or have the same problem as another person

Ex.: Nobody has any money to go out tonight. We're in the same boat.

13. Low-key = quiet, on a small scale, and not attracting a lot of attention

Ex.: He spent a lot of money for the last presidential campaign, but this time his campaign for re-election will be low-key.

14. Once in a blue moon = rarely

Ex.: He has a very nice car, but he drives once in a blue moon.

15. Raining cats and dogs = rain very heavily

Ex.: They didn't cancel the game even though it was raining cats and dogs.

16. Shaking like a leaf = be shaking your body a lot because you are cold, nervous, or frightened

Ex.: I went to a place in the city, and I didn't know it was one of the most dangerous areas there. After I heard 5 people were shot and killed on the same day in the same place, I was shaking like a leaf.

17. Tongue-tied = Unable to speak

Ex.: James talks a lot with friends, but often gets tongue-tied in important interviews.

18. Tip of his tongue = cannot remember something such as a word or the name of a person although you think you know it and you will remember it soon.

Ex.: The teacher asked them a question. The answer was on the tip of his tongue, but another student raised her hand and said it first.

19. Woke up on the wrong side of the bed = Feel a little angry and annoyed

Ex.: Don't talk to the boss today. It looks like she woke up on the wrong side of the bed.

20. Food for thought = Ideas that make you think carefully

Ex.: Today's reading assignment will give you enough food for thought to prepare for next week's class discussion.

21. Keeps her bed = stay in bed because of sickness or other cause

Ex.: She keeps her bed all day.

22. Bring home the bacon = win the game

Ex.: My mother told me to bring home the bacon for her.

23. Two-faced = hypocritically deceitful

Ex.: Marion told me that Lena is a two-faced lady.

24. Ship-shape = tidy, orderly

Ex.: A ship-shape room has a ship-shape owner.

25. Barking the wrong tree = blaming the wrong person

Ex.: The girl was so angry not knowing she is barking the wrong tree.

26. Toothsome = tasty

Ex.: A toothsome dessert makes up a good meal.

27. Apple of the eye = favorite person

Ex.: Mel Grant’s apple of the eye is my brother.

28. Tip-top = best of all

Ex.: The host announced that Jessie was the tip-top performer in the said contest.

29. Two-timed = to deceive (a mistress, lover, wife or husband) with someone

Ex.: Shin is a two-timer man, the reason why he and Anna broke up.

30. Downhearted = depressed, dispirited

Ex.: The sudden death of her cousin makes Chad downhearted.

31. Hammered = very drunk

Ex.: You were hammered, so I took your keys and drove you home.

32. Weak-kneed = lacking moral resolution

Ex.: He should know how to decide now that his in college even though his weak-kneed.

33. Up-braid = to scold

Ex.: Marcy was about to up-braid her brother when I enter.

34. Hit the books = Study very hard

Ex.: If you want to get an A in this class, you should start hitting the books right now.

35. In a prickle = be in difficult situation

Ex.: Now Janet is in a pickle. She had made two very important appointments at the same time.

36. It's about time = something should happen or should have happen

Ex.: Mary and Scott are getting married next week. It's about time! They've been dating for years!

37. It's easier said than done = It's easy to suggest, but hard to do

Ex.: I should just say "No" to him, but it's easier said than done.

38. Get over = begin feel better again after being sick or having an unhappy experience

Ex.: It took him years to get over the death of his wife.

39. XL = extra large, extra luxury

Ex.: "This shirt is marked XL. What does that mean?" "It means extra large. On cars, XL means extra luxury or power."

40. Yellow = lacking courage, afraid to defend

Ex.: Some fans think he's yellow because he doesn't fight.

41. Teeter-totter = a seesaw

Ex.: The children in the park love to play in the teeter-totter all day long.

42. Antsy = restless; impatient and tired of waiting

Ex.: I hope Katy calls soon. Just sitting around and waiting makes me antsy.

43. A piece of cake = very easy

Ex.: Bob said the test is difficult but I found out it was just a piece of cake.

44. Fed up with = out of patience; very tired of someone

Ex.: Charity, you’re too careless with your work. I’m so fed up with apologizing for your mistakes.

45. Red mist = losing temper and self-control completely

Ex.: Ruth really red mist when she finds out that Fritz loves Barbara more.

46. Bad apple = someone who has a bad effect on a whole group or system

Ex.: The corruption in the government started with a bad apple, a high official two years ago. Now the whole system is corrupt.

47. Up in the air = no decision has been made and there is uncertainty about it

Ex.: Helena left for it’s almost an hour and up in the air.

48. Eagle’s eyes = someone who has eagle eyes sees everything; no detail is too small

Ex.: In the sequel “Angela’s Eyes”, Angela is a detective with eagle’s eyes.

49. For the birds = poor quality

Ex.: It was a beautiful wedding, but the food was for the birds.

50. Kiss of = go

Ex.: When he's angry with me he says, "Kiss off!"

51. Razzle-dazzle = spectacular show, dazzling display

Ex.: Grandpa said the rodeo had too much razzle-dazzle.

52. Water-cooler talk = office news, gossip

Ex.: I believe water-cooler talk - unless it's about me.

53. For heaven’s sake = for the sake of everyone

Ex.: For heaven's sake, don't give her a teapot. She has four!

54. Bite off more than one can chew = to try something more difficult

Ex.: Do your best. Do whatever you can, but don't bite off more than you can chew.

55. Bucks = dollars

Ex.: The cheapest tickets for the concert cost 25 bucks.

56. Right as rain = everything is going well in life

Ex.: I really feel very happy for my life is as right as rain.

57. Upset the apple cart = causing trouble and upset people

Ex.: Martha leaves the team for upsetting the apple cart.

58. Egg on the face = made to look foolish or embarrassed

Ex.: Other comedienne in the comedy bar put some egg on the face to the audience near them. That’s awful!

59. Even Stevens = everything is equal between people

Ex.: I’m hoping for an Even Steven country but I think it’s impossible.

60. Kitty bar the door = play defensively, play only to prevent a goal

Ex.: In the third period, we play kitty bar the door and won.

61. Turnpike = a tollgate

Ex.: We stopover to pay the road fee in the turnpike.

62. Read me (CB Radio) = hear my voice, hear my message

Ex.: “Do you read me?” she asked. “Yes, loud and clear!”

63. Way cool = very nice, very cool

Ex.: His voice is way cool. I love listening to him.

64. For laughs = for fun, for amusement

Ex.: For laughs, we watch old movies.

65. Ace = make an “A” on a test, homework, project, etc.

Ex.: Congratulations Sakura, someone told me you aced it.

66. Before long = soon

Ex.: The movie will premiere before long.

67. Blabbermouth = a very talkative person – especially one who says things that should be kept secret

Ex.: I know that I’m glib person but not a blabbermouth.

68. Even keel = balanced

Ex.: Make sure it is even keel to prevent the girl from falling.

69. Under the skin = they really annoy you

Ex.: My roommates really get under my skin. And it’s too much!

70. Road to Damascus = someone has great and sudden change in their ideas or beliefs

Ex.: Hey, what happen to you? Yesterday you agree but now you already change and road to Damascus.

71. Kiss it off = not deal with it

Ex.: We’re fighting for equal pay. We won’t let them kiss it off.

72. Broke = without money

Ex.: I don’t think the MC Hammer broke is just an issue.

73. Eat one’s words = admit that what you said was wrong

Ex.: Max told me he will never gonna like me but I will let him eat his words. He’ll see.

74. Kiss the blarney stone = say a lot of compliments

76. Wax eloquent = speak beautifully, make a speech using nice words

78. Rolling in the aisles = audiences watching something are laughing loudly

Ex.: In high comedy type of comic, the audiences are expected in rolling the aisles.

Ex.: She stop going to school because she’s up to duff.

80. Every dog has its day = everyone gets their moment to shine

Ex.: It’s her time now to stand out, next time will be mine. Remember, every dog has its day.

81. Walk-up = apartment house without any elevator

Ex.: Java lives in a walk-up around the corner.

82. Bad-mouth = say unkind things to someone

Ex.: I thought they like me but I’ve found out that they’re bad-mouthing me all this time.

83. Eleventh hour = at the last minute

Ex.: Thanks God I finished the project at the last minute.

84. Beat around the bush = evade an issue; avoid giving a direct answer

Ex.: Will you come or not? Stop beating around the bush.

98. Kowtow = do as someone wishes

Ex.: Marie won’t kowtow to anyone.

99. Rotter = one who cheats or lies

Ex.: Rotters are rampant now a day.

100. Rot gut = homemade liquor

Ex.: If you drink that rot gut, you’ll get sick. It tastes awful!
